The Bread & Butter Project
The Bread & Butter Project
Our Story
Our journey began in 2013, after renowned Sydney chef and baker Paul Allam and his wife Jessica Grynberg, visited a group of refugee women at an orphanage on the Thai-Burmese border. Paul and Jessica taught the women how to bake bread, helping them establish a social business that supports the women and the orphanage to this day.
On returning home, this wonderful initiative provided inspiration for Paul and a small group of willing and passionate friends, and The Bread & Butter Project was born.
To date, The Bread & Butter project has trained 120 refugees to become bakers – offering on-the-job training, English tutoring and many levels of wrap-around support. Every trainee has been offered paid employment on completion of their program, providing financial independence, and a sense of belonging in their new Australian community.
