Lou's Pea & Smoked Ham Soup

Title: Serves 1 (400g)

The soup that tastes like it's been on the stove all day. Because it has.

This isn't the pea and ham soup that comes from a tin. Lou starts with a high-quality free-range pork hock and slowly simmers it with split peas until the meat falls apart on its own. Fresh peas and mint go in right at the end, keeping their colour and giving the whole pot a lift that the traditional version doesn't have. The soup is puréed smooth, then the shredded pork hock is stirred back through the broth.

It's a proper, old-fashioned pea and ham soup, just made with a bit more care than most. Hearty enough for a cold night, simple enough that it doesn't need anything else — just a warm bowl and a spoon.

About Your Cook

Hi, I'm Lou,

I am a country girl and my love of produce lives with me everyday. I have been cooking from a very young age, guided at first by the skillful and resourceful knowledge of my Mother and then through prolific exploration of food markets, of cooking and nutrition books, learning new techniques, experimenting with ingredients, learning the science of changes with heat and combining ingredients, the art of flavours.

FAQ's

Lou uses a whole free-range pork hock, slow-simmered with split peas until it's fall-apart tender, rather than processed ham or stock powder. Fresh peas and mint are stirred through at the end for colour and freshness, something you won't find in a mass-produced version.

Defrost in the fridge or microwave, then reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave until piping hot, stirring through halfway. Because it's puréed with shredded pork hock through it, a quick stir before serving brings it back to the right texture.

Pea and ham soup is a good source of protein and fibre from the split peas and pork hock, and Lou's version is made with real, whole ingredients — no fillers or preservatives. It's a filling, nourishing option for a cold night.
