Cynthia's Dutch Croquettes

Serving: 6 Croquettes

Crispy golden croquettes filled with rich, silky beef ragout

Cynthia’s croquettes are a beloved Indo-Dutch snack, born from the fusion of Dutch and Indonesian cuisines. These golden parcels are filled with a savoury mixture of slow-cooked beef mince, vegetables, and potato, rolled in fine breadcrumbs, and deep-fried until irresistibly crisp on the outside with a soft, fluffy filling inside. Every bite delivers crunch followed by tender, spiced beef and potato – the kind of flavour and texture contrast that makes them a staple across generations of Indo-Dutch families.

This recipe has been passed down from Cynthia’s grandmother, who prepared many Indo-Dutch dishes after growing up in Indonesia during Dutch colonial times. Today, Cynthia continues this tradition, sharing croquettes that celebrate her heritage and introduce more people to the vibrant but little-known world of this cuisine. Whether enjoyed as a snack with mustard, part of a mezze-style spread, or as a light meal with salad and bread, these croquettes bring together the best of two cultures in every bite.

FAQ's

Indo-Dutch cuisine is the result of Dutch and Indonesian cultures blending during the colonial period. Dishes like croquettes, nasi goreng, and spekkoek became staples in Dutch households, adapted with local Indonesian spices and ingredients. Cynthia’s croquettes are a direct reflection of this history – a Dutch snack with Indonesian influence that’s become part of her family heritage.

Traditional European croquettes usually feature a simple ragout or mashed potato filling. Indo-Dutch croquettes, like Cynthia’s, often incorporate subtle Indonesian spices and a mix of beef, vegetables, and potato for extra flavour depth. They’re lighter and more aromatic, making them distinct from heavier European versions.

The classic Dutch way is simple – serve hot with a dab of mustard. For a fuller meal, pair them with crusty bread and salad. They also work wonderfully as appetisers at parties or part of an Indonesian rijsttafel (shared feast). For best texture, reheat in the oven or air fryer until crisp and golden.

    Great as a entree

These were really enjoyable. We had them without a dipping sauce and they were still very tasty. Will be ordering more and experimenting with different dipping sauces
