Richard’s cottage pie is rooted in his mother’s hand-me-down recipe, one he’s enjoyed since childhood and now cooks with his own thoughtful enhancements. Lean beef mince is simmered with Kyogle garlic, carrots, and peas in a rich tomato and beef sauce flavoured with bay leaf, Italian herbs, Worcestershire, and a splash of red wine for depth.

The mash topping blends fluffy white potato with naturally sweet golden sweet potato, finished with melted cheese that browns beautifully in the oven. It’s a nod to tradition but with extra flavour, colour, and nutrition. Honest and hearty, this cottage pie shows how recipes passed down through families can be honoured while still evolving.

  • Preparation:
    Step 1 - Defrost in fridge overnight
    Step 2 - Preheat Oven 180°C
    Step 3 - Remove lid, cover with foil
    Step 4 - Bake 25mins until golden

It comes down to the meat. Cottage pie uses beef mince, while shepherd’s pie uses lamb (because shepherds tend sheep). Everything else – gravy, vegetables, and potato topping – is similar, but Richard’s recipe is true cottage pie thanks to the beef base.
